Grade 1

Curriculum Framework

Grade 1 is where formal schooling properly begins. It is the first year of Basic Level under Nepal's National Curriculum Framework, and the point at which children move from developmental activity to a defined, subject-wise timetable. At Himalaya College, Grade 1 follows the NEB curriculum in full English medium instruction, while still keeping first-day-of-school nerves in mind; six-year-olds need a firm structure delivered gently, not a sudden jump into rigid classroom discipline. Subjects Taught

The Grade 1 timetable covers eight core subjects: English, Nepali, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Health and Physical Education, Moral Education, and Computer Education. English and Nepali both focus on reading fluency and basic writing, Mathematics builds on the numeracy work started in UKG, and Science and Social Studies are introduced as separate, simplified subjects for the first time rather than blended environmental topics. Computer Education at this stage is largely hands-on familiarity with a keyboard and mouse, not formal coding.

Learning Focus and Outcomes

Across the year, children are expected to read short paragraphs independently, write simple sentences with correct spacing and punctuation, perform addition and subtraction confidently within larger number ranges, and describe basic facts about their body, family and immediate environment. Moral Education classes use short stories and classroom discussion to build habits like honesty, respect for elders and cooperation, which matter just as much as academic content at this age. Health and Physical Education keeps daily movement built into the timetable rather than treating it as an occasional break.

How We Teach

Grade 1 classrooms use a mix of direct teaching, group activity, worksheets and short daily practice, with lessons kept to a length appropriate for six-year-old attention spans. Teachers introduce a proper homework routine, usually light and focused on reinforcing that day's lesson rather than new material. As with every class at our school in Koteshwor, class sizes are kept manageable so a teacher can correct a child's handwriting or reading pronunciation individually rather than only at the group level.

Assessment and Progress Reports

Grade 1 assessment follows the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation approach set out for Basic Level classes, which means regular classwork, short quizzes and teacher observation count for more than a single end-of-term test. Report cards describe a child's actual grasp of each subject rather than reducing the year to one number, and parents receive this alongside direct feedback at scheduled meetings. This keeps the focus on genuine learning rather than exam performance, which is exactly the habit we want a six-year-old to carry forward into Grade 2 and beyond.
