Grade 2

Building on Grade 1

Grade 2 takes the routines established in Grade 1 and adds real depth to them. Children arrive already used to a subject-wise timetable, so this year is less about adjusting to school life and more about strengthening actual skills: reading longer passages, writing fuller sentences, and handling maths problems that require a couple of steps rather than one. At Himalaya College, the second year of Basic Level under the NEB curriculum is where we start noticing which children need extra reading practice and which are ready to be stretched further, and we adjust classroom support accordingly rather than treating every seven-year-old identically.

Subjects and Syllabus

The eight-subject structure continues: English, Nepali, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Health and Physical Education, Moral Education, and Computer Education. English lessons move into paragraph writing and comprehension questions, Nepali builds vocabulary and grammar alongside reading, and Mathematics introduces simple multiplication and division concepts on top of the addition and subtraction from Grade 1. Science and Social Studies both widen out from Grade 1's basics into slightly more specific topics, such as types of plants and animals, or local geography and community roles.

What Students Achieve

By the end of Grade 2, most children can read aloud with reasonable fluency and expression, write a short paragraph on a familiar topic, solve two-digit addition, subtraction and simple multiplication problems, and answer factual questions about a Science or Social Studies lesson in their own words. Computer Education moves a little beyond basic familiarity into simple typing and using educational software under supervision. Moral Education continues to shape everyday behaviour through discussion rather than lecture, and Health and Physical Education keeps building coordination and stamina through games and structured exercise.

Classroom Methods

Teachers rely on a blend of guided practice, pair work and independent tasks, gradually shifting more responsibility onto the student compared to Grade 1. Reading circles, spelling practice and short weekly maths drills are common. As one of the English medium schools in Koteshwor that keeps its Grade 2 sections modest in size, we can give individual feedback on a child's handwriting, pronunciation or problem-solving method rather than only marking work right or wrong.

Reporting to Parents

Grade 2 continues under Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation, combining classwork, short unit tests, homework quality and classroom participation into a fuller picture of a child's progress than a single exam could give. Report cards break performance down by subject and skill area, and teachers flag early on if a child needs extra support in a particular subject, such as reading fluency or number work, so that gaps get addressed in Grade 2 rather than carried unnoticed into Grade 3.
