Grade 4

Curriculum Overview

Grade 4 continues the Basic Level structure set out in the National Curriculum Framework, but the demands on students step up noticeably. Nine-year-olds at Himalaya College are expected to read for understanding rather than just decoding words, show working in Mathematics rather than only giving an answer, and start connecting ideas across subjects, such as linking a Social Studies lesson on local geography to a Science lesson on weather. As an English medium school in Koteshwor, Kathmandu following the NEB curriculum closely, we treat Grade 4 as the year analytical thinking really starts to take shape, ahead of the more demanding classes still to come.

Subjects

Grade 4 keeps the same eight-subject spread: English, Nepali, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Health and Physical Education, Moral Education, and Computer Education. English work includes longer comprehension passages, structured essay writing and more formal grammar. Nepali follows a similar path in the mother tongue, and Mathematics introduces larger fractions, decimals, basic geometry and multi-step word problems. Science moves further into topics like the human body, simple machines and the water cycle, taught with diagrams and, where possible, simple classroom demonstrations.

Skills and Learning Outcomes

By the end of Grade 4, students are generally able to write a multi-paragraph piece with some organisation and detail, solve mathematics problems that combine two or more operations, read a Science or Social Studies passage and summarise it accurately, and hold a short classroom discussion using reasoned points rather than guesswork. Social Studies at this level starts introducing basic map skills and an understanding of Nepal's provinces and local governance, while Moral Education continues through discussion-based lessons on responsibility, honesty and respect for community.

Classroom Practice

Teaching in Grade 4 leans more heavily on questioning, group discussion and short research-style tasks than in earlier grades, though direct instruction still anchors each lesson. Computer Education builds on earlier typing practice with simple document creation and continued, closely supervised use of educational software. We keep class sizes manageable, which matters more at this stage since giving individual feedback on a growing essay or a multi-step maths solution takes real teacher attention, not just a quick glance.

Assessment Structure

Grade 4 assessment stays within the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation model used across Basic Level, combining unit tests, project work, homework and classroom participation into each term's report. This keeps pressure manageable while still giving parents an honest, subject-by-subject account of their child's progress.
